Gardeners Bloomsbury Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Bloomsbury is committed to providing gardening, grounds maintenance and related services in a way that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, contractors, clients, visitors and members of the public. This policy sets out our core approach to managing risks in gardens, outdoor spaces and associated work environments.
Policy Statement
The management of Gardeners Bloomsbury recognises its duty to maintain safe working practices and to comply with applicable health and safety legislation and industry standards relevant to gardening and landscaping. Our objective is to prevent injury, ill health, property damage and environmental harm arising from our activities, whether at client properties or at any premises we use.
This policy applies to all employees and workers engaged by Gardeners Bloomsbury, including temporary and seasonal staff. We also expect subcontractors working on our behalf to follow equivalent standards.
Responsibilities
Overall responsibility for health and safety rests with the company management, who will provide leadership, resources and support to implement this policy. Managers and supervisors are responsible for ensuring that safe systems of work are in place, communicated and monitored for the tasks they control.
Every employee has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. This includes following instructions, using equipment correctly, wearing appropriate personal protective equipment, reporting hazards, and cooperating fully with all safety measures.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
We will identify and assess the risks associated with our gardening and maintenance activities, including but not limited to the use of powered machinery, hand tools, pesticides and garden chemicals, working at height, manual handling, noise, vibration and exposure to weather conditions.
Risk assessments will be reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes in work methods, equipment, staffing or locations. Based on these assessments, we will develop and implement safe systems of work, method statements and site-specific precautions to control identified risks to an acceptable level.
Use of Equipment and Machinery
All gardening equipment, tools and machinery will be selected, maintained and used in accordance with manufacturer instructions and relevant safety standards. Only trained and authorised personnel may operate powered equipment such as mowers, trimmers, blowers, chainsaws and hedge cutters.
Pre-use checks will be carried out, and any defects or damage must be reported immediately so that equipment can be taken out of service and repaired or replaced as needed. Guards, safety features and emergency stops must never be removed, bypassed or misused.
Personal Protective Equipment
Gardeners Bloomsbury will provide suitable personal protective equipment where risks cannot be adequately controlled by other means. This may include protective footwear, gloves, eye and hearing protection, high visibility clothing, respiratory protection and weather-appropriate clothing.
Employees are responsible for using the provided equipment correctly, keeping it in good condition and reporting any loss or damage so that it can be repaired or replaced. PPE requirements for each task will be communicated through training, instructions and supervision.
Chemicals, Pesticides and Hazardous Substances
The use of garden chemicals, pesticides and any hazardous substances will be carefully controlled. Products will only be used where necessary and in strict accordance with label instructions and safety data. We will assess the risks of each substance and ensure safe storage, handling, application and disposal.
Only trained personnel may apply pesticides or similar products, and they must follow all control measures specified, including the use of appropriate PPE and preventing exposure to clients, the public, wildlife and watercourses as far as reasonably practicable.
Manual Handling and Ergonomics
Many gardening tasks involve lifting, carrying, digging and repetitive movements. Gardeners Bloomsbury will assess manual handling risks and introduce mechanical aids, team lifting and improved work methods where possible to reduce strain and the risk of musculoskeletal injuries.
Employees will receive guidance on good posture, safe lifting techniques and appropriate rest breaks when undertaking physically demanding work. Staff are encouraged to report any early signs of discomfort so adjustments can be made.
Working at Height and Site Safety
Where work at height is unavoidable, such as pruning tall hedges or trees, appropriate access equipment and controls will be used. Ladders, platforms and similar equipment will be selected, inspected and used safely by trained personnel. Unauthorised climbing or unsafe practices are strictly prohibited.
Site safety will be planned for each job, taking into account access routes, traffic, uneven ground, underground services and the presence of clients, neighbours and the public. Work areas will be organised to minimise risks, and warning signs or barriers will be used where necessary.
Training, Information and Supervision
Gardeners Bloomsbury will provide information, instruction, training and supervision appropriate to each role. This includes induction training, task-specific instruction, updates on new equipment or procedures, and refresher training where needed.
Supervisors will monitor working practices to ensure that safety procedures are followed and that standards remain consistent across all sites. Employees are encouraged to raise questions and concerns and to contribute suggestions for improving safety.
Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, incidents, near misses and cases of work-related ill health must be reported promptly. We will investigate such events to identify causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
First aid arrangements will be maintained, and employees will be informed of the procedures to follow in the event of injury, fire, chemical spill, equipment failure or other emergencies while working at client premises or in outdoor locations.
Environmental Considerations and Public Safety
Health and safety at Gardeners Bloomsbury includes consideration of environmental impacts and the wellbeing of the wider community. We will seek to minimise noise, dust and disruption from our operations and to protect plants, soil, wildlife and water where possible.
Work will be planned to avoid unnecessary disturbance to neighbours and passers-by. Tools and materials will be stored securely to prevent unauthorised access, and waste arising from our work will be managed and disposed of responsibly.
Cooperation with Clients and Continuous Improvement
We recognise that effective health and safety management depends on cooperation between Gardeners Bloomsbury, our clients and other parties on site. We will consult with clients about site-specific hazards and access requirements and will share relevant safety information relating to our work.
This policy will be reviewed periodically and when significant changes occur in our operations or legal obligations. Lessons learned from audits, inspections, incident investigations and staff feedback will be used to improve our arrangements and to further reduce risks associated with our gardening and maintenance services.
